Founded in 2019 by Bobak Tavangar, Brilliant Labs is a forward-thinking technology company based in Singapore, renowned for its innovative approach to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with eyewear. The company was conceived with the vision of endowing ordinary glasses with "visual superpowers" through AI, leveraging an open source development platform. This approach empowers creators to access Brilliant Labs' code and build novel applications for their devices, fostering a collaborative ecosystem of technological advancement.
In January 2024, Brilliant Labs made headlines with the launch of its flagship product, Frame. These cutting-edge glasses, designed to echo the minimalist style of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, seamlessly blend into everyday wear while offering advanced AI functionalities. Brilliant Labs Frame glasses are designed to be virtually indistinguishable from traditional eyewear, catering to users with prescription needs. Equipped with a voice assistant named Noa and an AI search engine known as Perplexity, Frame represents a significant leap in AI-enhanced eyewear. This product was introduced amid a competitive landscape featuring similar innovations from companies like Humane’s AI Pin, Rabbit’s R1, and Apple’s Vision Pro, following the less successful Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens.
Before Frame, Brilliant Labs had already established its presence in the augmented reality (AR) space with the Monocle—an AR lens designed to attach to conventional glasses. Like its successor, the Monocle employed open source software, highlighting the company’s commitment to accessibility and innovation. Through its pioneering products and dedication to an open source model, Brilliant Labs continues to lead the way in reshaping how technology and eyewear converge, offering consumers unprecedented capabilities and setting new standards in the tech industry.
