The German language follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which divides proficiency into six levels:

A1 (Beginner): Basic vocabulary, simple greetings, and everyday phrases.
A2 (Elementary): Understanding simple sentences, asking and answering routine questions.
B1 (Intermediate): Holding conversations on familiar topics, writing simple texts.
B2 (Upper Intermediate): Understanding complex texts, discussing topics fluently.
C1 (Advanced): Speaking fluently with a wide range of vocabulary and little hesitation.
C2 (Proficient): Near-native fluency with a deep understanding of the language.
Each level requires specific training and time commitment. Most job opportunities require at least B2 level proficiency. Universities in Germany typically demand B1 or B2 levels for admission. Those aiming for professional roles in Germany should strive for C1 or higher to compete effectively.
