When comparing Dutch vs German, vocabulary is one of the strongest similarities. Both languages share a significant number of words due to their West Germanic roots.

Similar Words in Dutch and German:
Dutch: Hond ? German: Hund (Dog)

Dutch: Brood ? German: Brot (Bread)

Dutch: Zon ? German: Sonne (Sun)

However, there are also false friends—words that look similar but have different meanings.

False Friends:
Dutch: “Slim” (Clever) vs. German: “Schlimm” (Bad)

Dutch: “Eventueel” (Possibly) vs. German: “Eventuell” (Eventually)

Dutch: “Raar” (Strange) vs. German: “Rar” (Rare)

Even though many words are similar, Dutch has more English and French loanwords than German, making it more accessible to English speakers.
